personal note: In 2012, a journey began after acquiring an unsigned pastel painting at an Amsterdam auction, labeled simply as “unknown 20th century.” Little did I know that this would lead me to the work of Belgian artist Georges Robèr (1893-1969). Robèr, who fled to Rotterdam during the Siege of Antwerp in 1914, became part of the artist group De Banding (1917-1926). I had long been intrigued by De Banding’s avant-garde exploration of theosophy and anthroposophy, where abstract forms and colors were used to reveal mystical phenomena behind visible reality. Over time, I’ve collected many of his paintings and collages. Here, Robèr’s collages are directly integrated into the wall, as if they rise from the drawing itself. The wall drawing, made with stove soot, stretches 22 meters and was on show from 01.05.23 to 01.05.24.
